Conductor and violinist, Roy Theaker has a diverse and well-travelled career.
As a soloist he has performed from Suntory Hall, Tokyo to the South Bank, London via the Holy Citadel, Amman and the European Parliament, Brussels. Invitations as a Guest Concertmaster include most of the major orchestras of Australia and South-East Asia – the Sydney, Melbourne, West Australia and Singapore Symphonies, Hong Kong Philharmonic and Orchestra Victoria – plus various Mediterranean and Scandinavian Orchestras.
Conducting engagements range from Mozart to Marvin Hamlish with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, staged Theatre and Ballet in Portugal, as an MD for Disney’s Musical "The Lion King" in the West End and Melbourne, to large scale symphonic and choral works. Recent studio work includes recordings with the RTE Concert Orchestra (Dublin) and the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra (Sofia).
Active in Melbourne’s commercial music scene he was solo strings (violin and viola) on "The Book of Mormon" and solo violin on "Muriel's Wedding", “Evita”, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Fiddler on the Roof", and leader for "The Wizard of Oz", "The Sound of Music", and Hugh Jackman's Australian tour, "Broadway to Oz".
Roy can be heard on the major music streaming platforms as soloist with the Bulgarian National Radio and the Orquestra do Algarve, as a chamber musician with the Brodsky Quartet and as a conductor with Dublin Brass.
After studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School, the Royal Academy of Music, London, and the Vienna Conservatoire, he toured extensively as a violinist with the Academy of St.Martin-in-the-Fields and the London Chamber Orchestra.
In 2014, Roy was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, "in recognition of his significant contribution to the music profession". He also holds an MBA, plays lots of squash and tennis and runs marathons.
He plays on an Honore Darazey violin c.1840.
