Adrian Tamburini – bass-baritone

Adrian Tamburini has sung many major roles with Zelman Symphony and was instrumental in creating the opportunities for us to produce two of our major concerts. He has appeared as soloist with Zelman Symphony more often than any other soloist. His concerts with Zelman Symphony are listed below:

Adrian sang the bass-baritone role in our 2013 Mahler 8 concerts along with seven other leading Australian operatic soloists with 580 performers on stage in the Melbourne Town Hall.

In 2017, Adrian suggested that he and Zelman Symphony should co-produce a performance of Shostakovich Symphony No 13 Babi Yar. The result was a sold-out highly acclaimed concert in Hamer Hall that commemorated the 75th anniversary of the massacres perpetrated during WWII by the Nazis and their sympathisers at Babi Yar on the outskirts of Kiev. The video of this concert has been shown in the United States. In November 2020, it was broadcast on Israel’s premier free-to-air TV station.

In 2019, Adrian sang the Bass-Baritone role in the Melbourne Bach Choir performance of the Verdi Requiem to critical acclaim.

When Adrian was rehearsing to sing in the World Premiere of Luke Styles’ opera Ned Kelly he was reading Behrouz Boochani’s book, No Friend but the Mountains. He was so moved by it that he suggested to Luke that he might write a Song Cycle for Adrian. The result is No Friend but the Mountains: A Symphonic Song Cycle being produced by Zelman Symphony, Arts Centre Melbourne and The Wheeler Centre to be premiered with Melbourne Bach Choir at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl as part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s 2021 Live at the Bowl Summer Season. In 2017, Adrian was the winner of Australia’s prestigious singing award, the Australian Opera Awards (YMF, MOST). His singing has featured on cinema releases of opera, DVD, international recordings, motion picture soundtracks, radio, and television. Adrian’s operatic debut was in 1997. He has had a varied and acclaimed career as an operatic soloist (Opera Australia, West Australian Opera, Melbourne Opera), a concert performer (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra, Sydney University Graduate Choir), a musical director and a producer.
